The Mahua (Madhuca longifolia) trees play an important role in the socio-economic life of tribes in Central India. The entire tree is vital to the tribal body, mind and spirit from cradle to grave. The flowers of Mahua tree are sweet and perfectly edible.According to National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, the nutritive value of ripe Mahua flowers even beats Grapes, Amla and Apples, which are considered very healthy.According to Ayurveda, the flowers of Mahua are used as a general health tonic, expectorant (removes cough), carminative (used to get rid of intestinal worms), and relives joint pain. Tribal women have Mahua laddus post delivery to regain stamina. It also acts as a natural galactogogue (increases lactation in new mothers). In spite of being a rich source of nutrition and easy availability in the rural areas, these flowers are not very popular as food. Since the last 4 years, we are making Mahua laddus, and are really happy to see an increase of urban people's liking of its taste. This effort may also increase the income generation potential of the tribals.
Flax seeds are one of the most concentrated plant sources of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which are considered as precursors for brain development of the foetus in the uterus until infancy. Flax seeds can be of great help in reducing the level of blood pressure and in dealing with constipation during pregnancy. They are also rich in antioxidants, B-vitamins, dietary fibres, proteins, and a group of phytoestrogens called lignans.
